Claudia is a wonderfully generous person, who has never let her pain get the best of her. She has rescued four kittens who have now grown into happy and healthy cats and regularly gives inspirational talks at the Royal Children’s Hospital to help other chronic sufferers in their time of need.

Claudia, for more than a decade now has suffered a horrifically painful auto-immune disease, Adult-Onset Stills Disease, that causes severe swelling and inflammation of the major joints, resulting in severe musculo-skeletal damage, spiking fevers, and intense pain. A disease toxic enough that caused her to go into cardiac arrest the year in which she was diagnosed at age 19.

Yet none of this got in the way of her academic success. After completing her first degree in Media and Journalism, she had just started on her second degree in International Relations and Trade when she was struck down with intense bouts of abdominal pain (late 2017).

After this extreme abdominal pain had sent her into the emergency ward several times, it was found on a scan that her uterus had formed scar tissue so severe, that it had adhered to her bowel, as well as binding her ovaries completely in place. Obvious to say that none of us expected to hear such a horrible state of health, not to mention that her stomach has swollen to the size of an 8 month pregnancy.

Additionally to all of this physical pain she was informed that she is no longer capable of reproduction, the scar tissues rendering her completely infertile, before us even being able to discuss our first child.

The painful processes of discussing surrogacy, donor eggs, IVF, etc. are all boxes we have to tick in order for Claudia to have her surgery, as she under the age of 35. And this is required under Australian medical law.

We have had extensive back-and-forths with the gynocelogical surgeon about the next step in the process.

She is going to need to be admitted a week prior to her surgery for monitoring and to check all of her bloods (to ensure that her current chemotherapy and immunosuppressants are out of her system). Then when this is all correct she will need to undergo several hours of surgery to remove her entire uterus, including her fallopian tubes and possibly her ovaries. Furthermore, the scar tissue on the bowel will need to be removed and the bowel will need to be cauterized. Any further complications found at this point could result in a section of bowel being removed.

So far already we have accrued over $2500 on bills for consults from gynocelogical surgeons and the plethora of scans necessary to accurately diagnose her disease. However, the real costs however are before us.

Due to the fact that Claudia’s case is so extremely complicated, she has been forced to have her surgery done privately, in order to be able to select her multiple specialists. (Immunologist, gynocological surgeon, gastro-intestinal surgeon, general physician, anaesthetist, pain specialist) And unfortunately these all come at a considerable cost, along with the consistent and substantial cost of more than 10 different daily medications.

To complicate matters even further, as Claudia has been at the mercy of her Stills disease, she has been unable to work for at least a year and a half.

We are anticipating the overall bill to be in excess of $10,000 and we are asking for the generosity of anyone who is able to help us reach our goal.

For as long as I have known Claudia, she has been the most generous and kind-hearted person I have ever known, one who will give anything to ensure the happiness of others. I feel that it would be amazing if she could, for once, feel for herself the generosity that she has always showed others.
